The Story of Evidence Based Medicine
«
on:
January 22, 2006, 10:12:56 AM »
Evidence Based Medicine is the new trend in medical practice all over the globe. Myslef, being from the EBM generation, I can\'t imagine how there could have been medicine without an evidence base. Apparently, there was.... and not too long ago either. I posted the story of how EBM began in Downloads/ extracurricular subjects. This is the story of how ONE man changed the face of medical practice in his country and the whole world. If we only get from it that one man\'s effort makes a difference, it will be a valuable lesson to learn, let alone what EBM is.

this is a good presentation and waiting for the next one
but i have a question:
i understood that EBM means that we look for the best treatment for a case according what what we have experienced before that this treatment had a good results in this case ( am i right ?)
but how did they deal with cases before i didn\'t get it , did they give them any treatment or what?
as i think it\'s naturally when u find that something is working in a good way u will use it again.
correct me if i understood it wrong

Not our previous experiences as in the personal observation of each doctor alone. This is what they used to do in the past. Each doctor would treat his patients based on his own conclusions that he/she derived from his own experience with treating patients in a similar condition. Therefore, you could find 10 or 100 doctors treating the same thing in a different way and each insists that his/her way is the best. Who is right?
This is the question that EBM came to solve. There is no way to know who is right unless we compare all the different methods of treatment in a properly designed research study and find out by a very robust and rigorous method of analysis which one is really best. I will explain to you how EBM methods does that in further presentations.

OK, folks. I broke my word. I posted the next set of slides and they are NOT about systematic reviews. They are a clinician\'s approach to the justification of EBM. Why is EBM important. Systematic reviews are next...really this time:)

this presentation makes the last one more clear
but again i have a question:
what i understood until now that we collect different trials and know the effeciancy and efficacy, adverse effects and costs and make them available for all the doctors and patients to choose the appropriate one (am i right ?)

Yes, you are right. We collect them from research studies.
Often, research studies prodcue very clear results but sometimes they bring out conflicting results and you find that you are still asking yourself....so which is the right thing to do? That\'s why systematic reviews were invented. I will post the systematic reviews presentation right now.
Go slowly with this one. If you don\'t understnad all of it, don\'t worry. These things get clearer when you think about them a little bit....and you are welcome to ask again.
