Wikipedia says :

Quote
The axillary artery may be safely clamped without endangering the arm, but only in a location proximal to the origin of the subscapular artery. The anastomotic network surrounding the scapula provides an alternate path for collateral circulation to the arm from arteries including the dorsal scapular artery and suprascapular artery.

I don't get it, Does this mean clamping distal to the origin of th subscapular artery endanger the arm?
If thats true , How comes?

Salam Alykom,

On revising some "old" anatomy (1st year)... Yes that's True...

How comes..:
 - We know that subclavian art. continues as axillary art. which then continues as brachial art. to the arm...
 - The anastmoses around the scapula gives a way from dorsal scapular & suprascapular arteries (branches from subclavian) to subscapular artery (branch from the 3rd"last- distal" part of axillary)
 - So, on clamping the axillary art. in its 1st or 2nd parts proximal to origin of subscapular,... there's still a path from subclavian to the 3rd part of axillary then to the arm through intact subscapular art. & other branches of the anastmoses..
 - But by clamping it distal to origin of subscapular, you'll close the way to the arm because the subscapular art. was the exit of the anastmoses to the rest of the axillary & then to the arm...

I'm not sure if that was clear enough or not  .. it needs a bit imagination..A rapid look in the atlas will show you more clearly how it comes..
